The Aspen Art Museum announced today that the Brooklyn-based Teresita Fernández has won its 2013 Aspen Award for Art.
Ms. Fernández is a sculptor represented by Lehmann Maupin who in 2005 received a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Fellowship.” Ms. Fernández has work in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, N.Y., the Miami Art Museum and the Seattle Art Museum, and recently became a member of President Obama’s U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.
The award has gone to artists like Ed Ruscha, Tom Sachs and Marilyn Minter. Winners are feted at a gala over the summer, and last year’s, for Mr. Sachs, raised $1.8 million for the museum.
