This year, the Whitney Museum is doing something different for its 2012 Studio Party, teaming up with Grey Area (the company’s Kyle DeWoody is co-chairing the event) to bring you Instagram works by some renowned artists who will be anonymously submitting pictures they’ve taken and edited with the social media platform.
This special addition is part of a larger emphasis on photography at this year’s gala, a move inspired by the event’s honoree, Sondra Gilman Gonzalez-Falla, the museum’s longest-standing trustee and the the namesake of the photography department’s curatorial position and gallery.
The many participating artists include Emily Roysdon, Dustin Yellin, Liz Magic Laser, Alex da Corte, E.V. Day, Kalup Linzy, Sara Greenberger Rafferty, Hank Willis Thomas, Dawn Kasper, Hernan Bas, Xavier Cha, Julia Chiang and Adam Green.
To make it easier to carry these Instagram photos home and show them off, the museum will be making unique 4 x 4 pictures that it will display on a photo wall at the party and offer up for sale at $100 a pop. And proceeds of the sales will go to the museum’s Youth Insights Program, a free after-school program that brings together New York City high school students and contemporary artists.
The names of the artists will be revealed at the party, but here is a slide show of some of the works you’ll see to give you a taste of the photos you can pick up.
