The BBC is reporting that a Moscow court today suspended the two-year sentence of Yekaterina Samutsevich, one of the three members of the activist group Pussy Riot, who were convicted in August of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred” for staging a protest against Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Christ the Saviour cathedral in the Russian capital in February.

From the BBC:

The judges on Wednesday accepted the argument of Samutsevich’s lawyer—that Samutsevich had been thrown out of the cathedral by guards before she could remove her guitar from its case for the band’s “punk prayer.”

The two other members, who will remain in jail, delivered statements at the court hearing that freed Ms. Samutsevich, with Maria Alyokhina telling the room, “We won’t stay silent—even in Mordovia, or Siberia—however uncomfortable that is for you.”

Though the case has caused a widespread international outcry, opinion is divided in Russia, with one poll showing stating that 43 percent of Russians felt the sentence should have been harsher.
