Art collector, philanthropist and financier Eli Broad announced this week that he’ll be donating 19 works, including Roxy Paine’s Containment 1, to the new Zaha Hadid-designed Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, at his alma mater Michigan State University. The museum will debut on Nov. 10.

Michael Rush, the museum’s director who is curating the inaugural shows at the museum, selected the works from a list. Pieces by Donald Baechler, Sue Williams, Ross Bleckner, Jonathan Borofsky and Elizabeth Murray were among those that made the cut. The works together are worth around $2 million.

“This extraordinary gift helps us fill a significant gap in our collection of contemporary art,” said Mr. Rush in a statement, “specifically 80’s and 90’s paintings.
