Talk: Monika Sosnowska’s Public Art Fund Lecture
Polish artist Monika Sosnowska, who’s famed for installations and large-scale sculptures that often take outmoded architectural styles and forms to twisted, unsettling ends, will discuss her work as part of Public Art Fund’s long-running lecture series. These talks have a habit of being intensely engaging. Ms. Sosnowska’s latest project, a public sculpure at the southeast corner of Central Park, also goes on view this day. —Andrew Russeth

Opening: “Color Field” at Mitchell-Innes & Nash
Color Field painters Helen Frankenthaler, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland and Frank Stella are the subject of this upcoming show. With the Color Field painters in the news recently—the Helen Frankenthaler estate being picked up by Gagosian and Sam Gilliam being snapped up by David Kordansky Gallery—this show is more timely than ever. —Rozalia Jovanovic

Opening: “Glenn Ligon: Neon” at Luhring Augustine
Glenn Ligon’s first solo show at Luhring Augustine will bring together a good number of the artist’s neon works. Though he’s known mostly for his text paintings, which he’s been doing since the 1980s, in 2005, he moved into neon. You may have caught some of his neon pieces at his mid-career retrospective at the Whitney Museum last year. This time around, he’ll be showing some pre-existing work as well as new work created for the show, like Double America (2012), which continues a series of works that use the word “America.” —R.J.

Opening: Seth Price, “Folklore U.S.,” at Petzel
Note the address! Petzel is inaugurating its new space with a Seth Price show that its news release says will feature “paintings on plywood, vacuum-formed rope paintings, cloth sculptures fabricated in the garment district, and pieces from the Spring/Summer 2012 garment collection he designed in collaboration with Tim Hamilton.” The work “extrapolates” on Mr. Price’s Documenta 13 project, which included Hamilton outfits lined with the patterns that line business envelopes. He also wrote a short text for the show. Here’s a tasty excerpt: “You’re a bubble bath, box of chocolates, and Chardonnay type gal; I’m a guy who likes to get home and kick back, uncork a nice red, feet up, Bach deedle-dee-deeing, mushrooms bubbling in cream sauce.” Seems like a winner. —A.R.
