18 Things to Do in Paris During FIAC

Once the art season starts, it doesn’t stop! Just as Frieze festivities were ending in London (check this week’s Observer and this website later today for more on that), art types moved to London for FIAC—the International Contemporary Art Fair. It opens to VIPs tomorrow, and the general public on Thursday. But the events have already started! There are a trove of museum and gallery openings, temporary sculpture parks and more on offer. At left, a brief guide to some of the goings-on in the French capital over the next few days.

The Giuliana and Tommaso Setari Collection at La Maison Rouge

This show at La Maison Rouge opens on Oct. 20, presenting the works in the collection of a very well-traveled Italian couple who have lived in New York, Milan, Rome, Capri, Brussels and Paris, where they settled in 2001. Their collection reflects their itinerant lives and houses an international roster of artists including Sol LeWitt, Franz West,Gerhard Richter, Carla Accardi, Michelangelo Pistoletto and Ettore Spalletti.

Michael Werner Collection at The Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris

The Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris has mounted a show that has almost 900 works from the collection of dealer Michael Werner, including 127 paintings. The “core reference point,” according to the museum, is Paris, naturally.

Thaddaeus Ropac space opening in Pantin

Just north of Paris, in Pantin, Thaddaeus Ropac, who opened his first space in Salzburg in 1983, will be inaugurating a massive 55,000-square-foot gallery with two solo shows—one featuring Anselm Kiefer, the other, Joseph Beuys.

New Gagosian space at Le Bourget airport

In case you were worried that Larry Gagosian didn’t have enough galleries spread out over a bunch of different continents, the dealer will be opening his newest space—all 17,760 feet of it—inside, of all places, Le Bourget airport in Paris. The space will open with a show by Anselm Kiefer (sounds familiar).

Jeu de Paume's full slate of new shows opens today, including a retrospective of Mexican photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo and a show by the mid-career Portugese artist Filipa César.

'Art Walk' on Ile Seguin

On Ile Seguin, an island in Paris, 17 artists will present pieces. Jean Nouvel is at work on a project for the island called R4, an "artistic micro-city" that will include gallery space, studios and other cultural destinations. It's scheduled to open in 2015. The temporary "art walk" will be open to the public from today through Oct. 21.

Opening at Rosenblum Collection and Friends

Collectors Steve and Chiara Rosenblum will open a new show in their two-year-old Joseph Dirand–designed private exhibition space on Thursday. Titled "Crossing Mirrors," it features work by Nick van Woert, Sterling Ruby, Amanda Ross-Ho, and a bevy of young and mid-career talents.

Jeremy Kost Visits Paris

Museum of Everything Opens Pop-Up

Briton James Brett, whose Museum of Everything celebrates the work of so-called outsider artists, is opening a show with his outfit during FIAC at 14 boulevard Raspail, a onetime seminary. The roughly 10,000-square-foot space will feature some 500 works by a wide variety of artists.

Now in its seventh edition, the Slick Art Fair saw 17,000 visitors last year. This year it will present 40 exhibitors at a space called Le Garage.

Marcel Duchamp Prize Awarded

The Marcel Duchamp Prize is given annually to honor an artist working in France. The winner receives a €35,000 ($45,600) award and additional funding for a solo show at the Centre Pompidou. The nominees vying to join a list of past winners—Mircea Cantor (2011), Thomas Hirschhorn (2001) et al.—this year includes Valérie Fabre, Dewar & Gickel, Bertrand Lamarche and Franck Scurti. The winner will be announced Saturday. Pictured is the 2009 prize ceremony.

Palais de Tokyo Inaugurates Shows, Hosts 'Immaterial' Auction

Not only is the Paris exhibition space Palais de Tokyo toasting the opening of its new shows (Markus Schinwald and Helen Marten are among the artists presenting work), but it is also hosting what it calls an "immaterial" auction, selling off various experiences to raise funding for its projects. Among the lots: drinking tea with Hiroshi Sugimoto (sounds pleasant) and clubbing with Francesco Vezzoli in Milan (sounds terrifying).
