In case you missed it, The New York Times unveiled last week a “History of New York in 50 Objects.” The list was inspired by the British Museum’s famous “A History of the World in 100 Objects,” which focused only on objects in the British Museum’s collection.

On the New York list, there’s some pretty familiar things: the Oyster, the Artichoke, a Levittown House, the Greek Coffee Cup, an AIDS Button, a MetroCard and Dust, among other objects. (Pretty comprehensive, though we’d also add the ubiquitous Subway Rat.) Have a look at the entire list, with annotations, here.
