Opening: “Karen Kilimnik & Kim Gordon” at 303 Gallery
Is there anything better than two great artists teaming up for a two-person? Each will present a new video installation for this outing. Ms. Kilimnik’s involves the film Desperately Seeking Susan and MTV’s iconic TV show “House of Style,” according to the gallery’s news release. Ms. Gordon’s features electric guitars and Rodarte dresses. The latter will also present a work called Black Glitter Circle. —Andrew Russeth

Party: The LIC Block Party
Long Island City’s SculptureCenter and the Purves Street Block Association are throwing an afternoon block party with activities like tarot card reading with Jesse van Buren, Cubist face painting with Stephanie Dodes and penny cleaning with something called the Clean Penny Service. Artworks and various art-related objects will also be on sale from the likes of Denise Kupferschmidt, Paper Monument, Primary Information, Kirk Stoller, Swill Children, Jeffrey Tranchell, Gil Yefman, Rona Yefman and more. Swoon hosts Pearly’s Beauty Shop at See Exhibition Space
Dustin Yellin, Mickalene Thomas, Natalie Frank, Duke Riley, K8 Hardy and Dzine are some of the artists who will be offering up their services for a few hours at Pearly’s Beauty Shop, a makeshift two-day beauty parlor hosted by Callie Curry (a k a Swoon) to raise money for her art center in North Braddock, Penn. But rather than painting a canvas or carving wood, these artists will be painting your nails and creating dioramas in your hair. Get there early to sign up, as these artists will be meting out their talents on a first come first serve basis. And this pop-up “salon/party of ecstatic aesthetic embellishments” runs all night with installations, music by DJs Dirty Finger, Manhate and 3 Kings International Sound and performances by Roofeeo, Shenandoah Davis, Anya Sapozhnikova and more. —R.J.

Open Studios: “GO: a community-curated open studio project,” Open Studio Weekend
This weekend, “GO,” offers New Yorkers the chance to participate in an open studio event that puts all others to shame. From Red Hook to Bensonhurst, there are more than 40 neighborhoods represented. In this open studio event, studio visitors have the ability to nominate artists for inclusion in a group show that will be held at the Brooklyn Museum. Based on your nominations, curators from the Brooklyn Museum will then select up to 10 artists to participate in that show, which opens in December 2012. To participate, you do have to register (it’s free!), and to nominate artists you’ll need to visit at least five studios. But you can also just visit studios without registering, if you’re not going to vote. Either way, you’ll most certainly need a map.
