After a long summer vacation, Artforum has returned with its September issue. It is a beauty, and one of the thickest issues in recent memory. A Lawrence Weiner adorns the cover. Inside are articles commemorating the magazine’s 50th anniversary, with a number of pieces from former Artforum editors in chief. Jack Bankowsky explains his decision to launch the magazine’s popular online “Scene & Herd” column, Ingrid Sischy chats with current Artforum EIC Michelle Kuo and Tim Griffin considers “art and artificial life.” But we are here now for the ads. There are many of them. Here are the best. —A.R.

Mark Flood at Zach Feuer

The always great Zach Feuer really blew me away here. What a subtle way to convey information, what a weird metaphor for an art show, a photographer and an audience watching a couple on a bed. Fairly appropriate for a show that will include works like Skank Angels, Vaginal Excavation and the "All Women Are Whores" series. —Dan Duray

Peter Doig at Michael Werner Gallery

What's Peter Doig been up to since his last solo gallery shows in 2009? You won't find out here. Werner presents only a snapshot of the artist's studio wall with castoff traces and daubs of paint. There's a blank rectangle where a painting once hung. You'll need to head to the gallery's new London branch in October to see Mr. Doig's latest work. This is the month's most painful tease of an Artforum ad. —A.R.

Richard Phillips at Gagosian Gallery

Richard Phillips gained a broader audience through his films based on Lindsay Lohan and the former porn star Sasha Grey, and the new show will have those videos along with some new paintings in that theme. The photograph says it all, though. There's fame, vulnerability, beauty, implied violence. Would Titian have painted Lohan, were he alive today? The invite has a quote from Picabia over the same image: "My happiness wants to sleep with me/but it wouldn't be dead/it isn't alive/I want to go beyond existence..." —D.D.
