The sculptor Justin Matherly is now represented by Paula Cooper Gallery. His name appeared in the gallery’s Artforum ad listing their artist roster, which includes, among a lot of other talent, Carl Andre, Sophie Calle, the estate of Sol LeWitt and Robert Wilson. The gallery confirmed with us on Wednesday that Mr. Matherly has joined their ranks.

Lately, Mr. Matherly has been working with concrete and aluminum supports, creating large pieces that look something like ancient rock carvings resting atop hospital-issued walkers. New Beaches, his first public commission, and his largest work to date, follows along these lines. It depicts Laoco├Ân, the Trojan priest who defied Poseidon, and is on view until Nov. 30 in City Hall Park as part of the Public Art Fund’s “Common Ground” show.

His last solo show in New York was “Readjusting my commitment to a greater legibility, or substance thinking and substance extended” at the Lower East Side’s Bureau gallery at the end of 2011. Mr. Matherly appeared at a group show, titled simply “Sculpture,” at Paula Cooper earlier that year alongside Liz Glynn, Amy O’Neill, Nadine Robinson and Michael Sailstorfer. Paula Cooper plans a solo show of his work in the spring of 2013.
