On Sunday, contemporary art collector Herbert Vogel died at the age of 89 in New York. Over the course of 50 years, Mr. Vogel and his wife Dorothy assembled an impressive collection of Minimal and conceptual art on a modest budget (he was a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service, she was a research librarian), often buying directly from artists and paying in installments. Beginning in the early 1990s, they began donating and selling hundreds of works by both well-known and less-familiar names to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., which holds more than 900 works from their collection. (The couple has promised hundreds more.) In the slide show above, a brief look at some of the works.
