Franz West, the renowned Austrian sculptor whose work cultivated a lively, sometimes bizarre sense of playfulness, which was no mean feat since he got his start during the brutally serious days of Viennese Actionism in the 1960s, died at the age of 65.

His work ranges from epic outdoor installations with seats for lounging to small sculptures, variously whimsical and dark, to sleek design objects to the Passstücke (Adaptives), handheld sculptures, ripe for play, that he developed in the early 1970s. The accompanying slide show takes a brief look at his storied career, which was capped in 2011 by winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale.
