The international architecture firm SOM is best known for its stolid glass towers, but partner Roger Duffy has shown that is not the only way. One of his favorite modes is collaborating with the Minimalist artists he admires to create experiential (and experimental) spaces, buildings not unlike the installations of these artists—James Turrell, Lawrence Weiner, Rita McBride. But that is not the only work this daring designer has created. Here are a dozen of his projects from the past decade, ranging from schools to luxury condo towers and international airports.

Roger Duffy's first completed project as a principal at SOM was a new lobby for 350 Madison Avenue, in which he tried to get artist Fred Sandback involved.

Mr. Duffy's first successful artist collaboration was the new Upper School at the Greenwich Academy in Connecticut.

Designed with James Turrell, the artist helped create light installations, as well as the overall feel of the project.

Mr. Duffy also designed the storefront Skyscraper Museum in Battery Park City.

With Lawrence Weiner, Mr. Duffy worked on a high school in Elizabeth, N.J.

One of Mr. Duffy's most ambitious collaborations, he worked not only with artists but also scientists on this new building for a Massachusetts private school.

One of Mr. Duffy's largest projects to date, he designed a new condo tower in Downtown Brooklyn. The closest project to the standard SOM typology—tall and glassy—it still looks different from just about any other skyscraper in the city.

SOM also had the luxury of designing the luxury interiors.

It is not only artists with whom Mr. Duffy collaborates. Here, he worked with a Mumbai fashion designer to help understand the local culture, and one of the features they came up with were these dramatic columns.
