Friday, April 27, Royal/T in Los Angeles will present a new exhibition, curated by Hanne Mugaas, featuring works by artists who “obsess, explore and celebrate” food. By obsessive, they might be referring to artists like Ann Cathrin, who casts ramen noodles in bronze; by celebratory they might be referring to Olaf Breuning’s shelves of tiny porcelain pots with googley-eyes; and by explorative, they might be referring to artists like Scott Reeder, whose painting of a pear smoking a pipe shows fruit in an existential mood—Ceci n’est pas un poire? You’ll also see clothing embroidered with hot dogs, surreal donuts, Cool Whip monsters and fast-food still-lifes by more than 40 artists, including Jim Drain, Marilyn Minter, Ella Kruglyanskaya, Yoshitomo Nara and Kenny Scharf. Of course, this exhibition is in Culver City, in the home state of the In-N-Out Burger. If you can’t make it to the West Coast, here’s a glimpse of what you’ll see.
