A security guard cleaning his gun in the locker room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art accidentally shot himself in the leg, The New York Times reported. According to museum spokesman Harold Holzer, the guard, who is being treated at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, and whose name was not released, “appears to be O.K.”

The accident happened shortly before 3:00 p.m. “deep underground, with no visitors or public around” according to Mr. Holzer. Only a limited number of guards at the museum are authorized to carry weapons, and since they’re not allowed to take them out of the building, they’re required to clean them on the premises.
