(Courtesy PMC)

David Zwirner’s expansion plans are rolling forward. On Tuesday night at the opening of the ADAA Art Show, he told Gallerist that he now has a representative in Hong Kong, Charlie Spalding, formerly of Pace’s Beijing outfit. Today the Times reports that the dealer has a London gallery on the way, in “an 18th-century Georgian town house at 24 Grafton Street, in the heart of Mayfair."

The gallery, which will open in October with a show from one of the dealer’s star painters, the Belgian Luc Tuymans, is being designed by New York architect Annabelle Selldorf, who is also responsible for the dealer’s upcoming Chelsea gallery, on West 20th Street, “which will have about 30,000 square feet on five floors, with natural light,” and “include a 6,000-square-foot column-free space with 18-foot-high ceilings.” That space is set to arrive in November.

With these latest moves into London and Hong Kong (where Jay Jopling’s London-based White Cube gallery just opened a new space, its fourth), Mr. Zwirner would seem to be intensifying his competition with Gagosian, who has 11 galleries, and who just happens to have opened a show of new work by the Zwirner artist Thomas Ruff at his two London branches.

“That would be one good reason for me to be in London,” Mr. Zwirner told us on Tuesday night, when asked about Mr. Ruff’s shows. “That’s one reason. And I have thirty-five artists. So that’s thirty-five reasons to be in London.”

In the Times today, Mr. Zwirner said of Mr. Gagosian: “Larry has a global model that seems to work.”
