For the second time in a month, David Zwirner is showing at the Park Avenue Armory. In early March, he brought a solo show of work by painter Suzan Frecon to the ADAA Art Show and sold it out. Now he’s returning to the Upper East Side venue, for the 32nd edition of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers show, with a booth devoted to Philip-Lorca diCorcia. It’s Mr. Zwirner’s first time at the annual fair, and, beginning at a gala preview on Wednesday night, he’ll be selling alongside 74 other international dealers, most of whom specialize in photography.
Exhibitors will no doubt bring some surprises to the fair, but many have provided an advance glimpse at their offerings, and there is plenty to swoon over, even in the form of digital images—for instance, a dark amber-colored albumen print by Julia Margaret Cameron of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longellow from 1868, his wrinkles and wisps breathtakingly crisp.
In addition to the photographs on view, AIPAD presents a series of panel discussions throughout the day on Saturday, March 31, at Hunter College. A few highlights: the Dutch artist Rineke Dijkstra will talk about her work and inspiration in anticipation of her retrospective at the Guggenheim; “Curator’s Choice: Emerging Artists in Photography,” moderated by Art in America editor Lindsay Pollock brings together a panel of young curators to discuss trends in photography and video; and “How to Collect Photographs: What Collectors Need to Know” features a panel moderated by gallerist Steven Kasher who will discuss which artists are garnering more attention these days, what fairs you should be attending and how the photography market has changed in recent years, a good primer for those interested in collecting photographs.
