Sarah Sze has been selected to represent the United States at the 2013 Venice Biennale, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, which is commissioning the work, announced today. The selection was made by the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The co-commissioners of the pavilion are Bronx Museum executive director Holly Block and the independent curator and critic Carey Lovelance.
The work for the installation will be titled Triple Point and, according to the Bronx Museum, “will inhabit and directly comment upon the architecture of the 1930s Palladian-style structure of the U.S. Pavilion designed by… William Adams Delano and Chester Holmes Aldrich, appearing to modify the building’s structure without actual physical change.”
The artist is known for using small, often minute, everyday materials to build beguilingly elaborate installations. “Sze’s boundary-defying work engages architecture and space, challenging the viewer by reorganizing reference points, disorienting and reorienting at every turn,” Ms. Lovelace said in a news release. The installation of the work will be streamed live through the Bronx Museum’s website.
Ms. Sze, 43, has been on absolute tear of late. She has a one-person show, “Infinite Line,” at Asia Society, up through March 25, and has a long-term installation along the High Line, Still Life With Landscape (Model for a Habitat), which is on view through June, 2012. She shows with Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in New York.
Past artists representing the U.S. in Venice include Allora & Calzadilla in 2011, Bruce Nauman, who won the Golden Lion in 2009, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, posthumously, in 2007 and Ed Ruscha in 2005.
