High Quality, and Quantity: Here Are the 376 Artists Participating in the 2012 Brucennial

animalfarm ad High Quality, and Quantity: Here Are the 376 Artists Participating in the 2012 BrucennialThis Wednesday the artist collective the Bruce High Quality Foundation will stage “Harderer. Betterer. Fasterer. Strongerer.,” the next edition of the Brucennial, its sometimes-annual biennial, at 159 Bleecker Street. “Harderer. Betterer. Fasterer. Strongerer.” will feature 376 artists, up from the last edition’s 322. The full list is available below and new participants range from the very emerging to the super-established, with Damien Hirst and Jean-Michel Basquiat making appearances, along with a few enlightened additions that fall somewhere in-between, like Richard Prince.

“The slogan of the Brucennial is about embracing maximalism for the sake of creating a giant, rambunctious community of artists,” the organization wrote in an email, its standard method of communication. “The show is really a celebration of people more than an exhibition.”

Though “Harderer. Betterer. Fasterer. Strongerer.” opens just one day before the Whitney Biennial, few comparisons should be made between the two events. Just for starters, participation in the Brucennial, which began in 2008, and then had editions in both 2009 and 2010, is guaranteed for all attendees of the organization’s free classes at the Bruce High Quality Foundation University.

“The Brucennial happens every two years, or really, you know, whenever we feel like it, and it’s a moment of celebration of the history of the people—of the reason why the people exist, of the nature of the people,” reads a quote about the 2010 edition attributed on the BHQF website to Francesco Bonami.

This weekend, as part of the Brucennial, the organization will stage a musical titled Animal Farm that envisions a fictional battle between the BHQFU and its trustees (chickens), who, like the real-life trustees of the Cooper Union, are considering charging tuition.
