The French newsweekly Le Point reports that Upper East Side- and Paris-based billionaire art dealer Guy Wildenstein owes $330 million in back taxes to the French government.
That number is part of some $789 million in back taxes reportedly owed by the heirs of the family’s former patriarch, Daniel Wildenstein, who died in 2001 and was accused of secreting money in offshore trusts, partially as a way of hiding it from Guy’s stepmother Sylvia Roth. The report comes in the wake of Mr. Wildenstein’s arrest this past summer, on charges that his family’s vault stored artwork not owned by the family, without proper documentation, and that some of it was swiped by the Nazis.
Neither the French budget ministry nor lawyers for the Wildensteins were quoted in the Point story. Thanks to Blouin Artinfo for pointing us to the scoop.
