Pascal Spengemann has been hired as the new director of Marlborough Chelsea, according to the Artnet Twitter feed and a source close to the gallery.

Mr. Spengemann had formerly been a founder and partner in the respected Chelsea gallery Taxter & Spengemann, which closed in the fall. Mr. Spengemann founded Taxter & Spengemann with Kelly Taxter in 2003.

Marlborough Chelsea is the downtown branch of Marlborough Galleries, which has had its headquarters on 57th Street since 1963. The downtown branch, on West 25th Street, is run by Max Levai, the 24-year-old son of Marlborough principal Pierre Levai. Max Levai has been making efforts to create a thriving contemporary art program at the branch, including opening an exhibition last week called “Blind Cut,” which was organized by Jonah Freeman and Vera Neykov and includes work by Fia Backström, Darren Bader, Anne Collier, Mark Flood, Claire Fontaine, Lothar Hempel and Adam McEwen.

Among the artists Taxter & Spengemann represented were Frank Benson, Xavier Cha, Matt Johnson, Andrew Kuo, Carter Mull and A.L. Steiner. Yesterday we broke the news that Mr. Benson, a sculptor, has signed with Andrew Kreps Gallery. It remains to be seen whether some of the other former Taxter & Spengemann artists will follow Mr. Spengemann to Marlborough.
