Performa 11 Roundup

  • Christie’s: Flowers, Mary’s Table by Willem de Kooning
    Start The Slideshow

Early next week, Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips de Pury will hold their biannual evening contemporary art auctions, which, like their Impressionist and modern counterparts, both reflect and affect the current state of the market for such works. At the slide show at left, we have collected the week’s 12 highest-estimated lots.

The houses have snagged some impressive merchandise this season. Both Christie’s and Sotheby’s feature excellent Francis Bacons, and the former has a superb Roy Lichtenstein.

Unsurprisingly, three of Sotheby’s Clyfford Stills made the cut for the slide show. They are completely new to the market, offered to support the new Denver museum devoted to his work. This is the first time that they have been seen in public since the artist’s death in 1980.

Our previous installment of this feature, for the Impressionist and modern auctions, featured just 10 slides. However, this time, three works tied for tenth place, requiring an expanded slide show. Next week, we will publish reports immediately following each of the auctions.
