TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25

Rancourt/Yatsuk “Black Diamond”
Named for the title assigned to top income earners in multi-level marketing organizations, artist duo Rancourt/Yatsuk set up an elaborate performance offering the audience a “highly sought-after lifestyle firsthand” by transforming the gallery into a multimedia entertainment lounge.

Artist Talk: “Jake and Dinos Chapman”
“The enfants terribles of Britart,” as they’ve been called, may be slightly out of place at the staid setting of the 92nd Street Y, but the conversation is sure to be lively as ever. We’re hoping that if we write it up they’ll start a journalistic feud with us, as is their M.O.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26

“PDF” Opens at Allegra LaViola Gallery
This six-person group show, curated by Patrick Gantert, brings together artists “whose practices travel across a variety of approaches and mediums,” not unlike Adobe’s Portable Document Format, that serves as the shows inspiration. Ivin Ballen contributes a neon-colored cardboard box that is actually acrylic on fiberglass—trompe-l’œil in three dimensions. On the other hand, Alex Da Corte’s work is made of nothing but latex balloons and “breath.” Also here are Petra Cortright, Talon Gustafson, Melanie McLain and Matthew Schrader.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27

“Bob Nickas: Catalog of the Exhibition: 1984-2011″
The esteemed critic and curator Bob Nickas debuts his memoir, which is written as only he can. One image represents each exhibit and if the proofs are any indication you’ll be floored by the end result. “A collection 27 years in the making.”

Richard Artschwager Opens at David Nolan Gallery
Approaching 90, Richard Artschwager continues to confound. He is painting and drawing on rough paper made from sugar cane pulp, the gallery explains in its press release. Alongside these new works will be pieces done on Celotex, another rough material, and a recent 89-inch-tall sculpture called Arch (2007), made of wood and covered with charcoal and acrylic.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28

Sue De Beer “Haunt Room” at The High Line
A public installation by artist Sue De Beer in the 14th Street Passage on the High Line will produce “haunted feeling” in the audience through the use of infrasound, an audio tone below the threshold of human hearing, known for producing a dizzy feeling, inexplicable smells and a sense of presence in the room.

The Review Panel
The month criticism panel hosted by artcritical.com editor David Cohen tackles the recent shows of Amy Cutler, Michelle Lopez, Melissa Meyer and Nicola Tyson. The critics at bat are the New Criterion’s Jame Panero, the Brooklyn Rail’s Patricia Milder and the inimitable Peter Plagens.
