According to an email message, 3rd Ward will be expanding to Philadelphia, a city the New York Times likes to call the sixth borough. Here’s what the folks at 3rd Ward have to say about their new location:
“There’s something about Philly we like. The history. The people. The architecture. There is an essence that reminds us of everything we love about Brooklyn, but with a unique spirit that surprises and excites us.”
3rd Ward has been in Bushwick for five years, off the Morgan L stop. The organization provides workspaces and educational services for artists and creative types. Depending on who you ask, they’ve helped the neighborhood grow (there’s a wine bar now!) or, uh, become gentrified (see: said wine bar). A statement on their blog says the new space is 27,000 square feet, located in the Northern Liberties/Old Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, which was once known as the “Workshop of the World.” How appropriate!
“A lot of our current Members and teachers are Philly natives,” the statement said, “So we’re thinking there must be a special kinship. It was meant to be.”
